Sights and entertainment on the Northern coast of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is a country rich in nature, picturesque places, mountains and sea.
The Bulgarian coast is conventionally divided into the Northern and Southern coasts.
The Northern coast stretches from the Romanian border down to the town of Byala.

So what interesting things can you see, where can you take a walk, where can you go if you have arrived/flown into Varna?

Let’s start with interesting places in Varna:

  • The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin is located in the centre of Varna.

  • The Stoyan Bachvarov Dramatic Theatre is located in the centre of Varna, near the Cathedral. World-class theatre, ballet and operetta productions are staged there. You can check the programme at the box office or online. In summer, performances are held in the open-air amphitheatre in the Sea Garden.
  • The Archaeological Museum is a historical treasure of the city: archaeological artefacts and medieval exhibits, as well as the treasure – the oldest gold jewellery in the world.
  • The Puppet Museum is the only one of its kind in Bulgaria and is famous throughout Europe. Performances are held every week; children will be delighted after attending such an event.
  • The Roman Baths – considered a historical cultural monument of Varna, built in the 2nd century, they showcase Roman culture.
  • The Dolphinarium – located in the Sea Garden, with shows held every week. The programme is fascinating, and after the show ends you can have your photo taken with a seal. Children will be thrilled.

  • The Varna Zoo in the Sea Garden.
  • Varna City Tour, a double-decker bus that will introduce you to the entire Northern coast: Varna, Saint Constantine and Helena, Golden Sands, Albena, Balchik, Kavarna.

If you decide to travel further and see interesting places around Varna:

  • The Monastery of Saint Constantine and Helena, located 10 km from Varna in the resort of Saint Constantine and Helena. The place is unique for its energy; a holy spring flows beneath the altar itself. It is the only such site in Europe.
  • The Botanical Garden of Sofia State University. Located 10 km from Varna. An excellent place for a walk and a picnic. Especially in the summer, if you have decided to relax with a group of friends and organise a barbecue – I recommend going there. On weekends the spots are usually booked, so it is best to call in advance and check. Phone number: +359 52 361 941
  • The Aladzha Monastery – located in a rocky gorge, 16 km from Varna. In the 4th century, Christian believers (hermits) lived there; later it became a clerical monastery. In the 14th century it was destroyed during the Ottoman Empire, but some parts have survived, and monks lived in the caves until the 14th century.
  • The Albena Resort (30 km from Varna): the „Baltata“ nature reserve, a dervish monastery. The Albena Balneological Centre – algae and mineralised mud that rejuvenate the skin and the body. Wonderful spacious beaches stretching 5 km, a place for walks, leisure and relaxation. There is a water park for children.

  • The town of Balchik (40 km from Varna) – lots of greenery, a combination of mountains and sea, amazing nature. Places of interest: the Botanical Garden, where the Palace of the Romanian Queen Maria is located, wine cellars, a splendid promenade. Four km away lies the salt lake Tuzla, famed for its healing mud. Near Balchik there are world-class golf courses with incredible views of the entire Northern coast. After a walk it is pleasant to have lunch or enjoy cool drinks at one of the Thracian Cliffs complexes, admiring the panorama over the sea.

  • The town of Kavarna (60 km from Varna). I recommend seeing Cape Kaliakra (12 km east of the town), which rises 2 km above sea level, a beautiful place with views over the entire Northern coast. On the cape there are caves and a small chapel. The „Dalboka“ mussel farm, an excellent restaurant with a sea view. It is the only place along the entire coast where such a quantity of mussels is farmed. I recommend it to all seafood lovers. Twenty km from Kavarna lies Cape Rusalka, previously a nature reserve. A very pleasant place for a family beach holiday. „Bolata“ Bay – this is part of the Kaliakra reserve and ranks among the TOP most beautiful bays in the world. The beach is small and the descent to the sea is gentle.

  • The „Stone Forest“ Valley, located 17 km from Varna within a perimeter of 70 sq km, with limestone stone columns – an intriguing place.
  • The Kamchia Reserve, about 30 km from Varna. A picturesque place; you can take a boat trip or stroll through the park, which is officially recognised as a nature reserve. A quiet place with clean air.
  • The town of Byala (located 46 km from Varna) – the „Beli Skali“ nature reserve, a fortress from ancient settlement times.
