Sights and entertainment on the Southern coast of Bulgaria.

Bulgaria is a country rich in nature, picturesque places, mountains and the sea.
The Bulgarian coast is conventionally divided into the Northern and Southern parts.
The Southern coast begins from the town of Obzor and stretches to the Turkish border.

So what interesting things can you see, where can you take a walk, and where can you go if you have arrived/flown into Burgas.

Popular tourist spots in Burgas:

• St. Anastasia Island (6 km from Burgas). During the communist era, the island was called “Bolshevik”; it served as a transit point for refugees to the Soviet Union in 1924. Nowadays it is a place of leisure, comfort and tranquillity. On the island there is an Orthodox church with ancient iconostases, a museum and an old lighthouse.  The island also has a large restaurant serving fresh seafood.

• The Sea Park in Burgas, stretching for 6 km. It features restaurants, cafes, a zoo and an amphitheatre.

• Lake Atanasovsko is considered a natural reserve of Burgas. More than 300 species of birds live there. In winter the lake does not freeze.
• The Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius is the “heart” of Burgas.
• A peacock breeding farm.
• The Historical Museum of Burgas.
• Lake Mandra is one of the three lakes in Burgas. Previously the lake was salty, but after the 1970s it became a reservoir. It is a protected lake in Bulgaria. The lake is 8 km long.

Places worth attention on the Southern coast:

• The Castle in Ravadinovo – it is also called “The Castle in Love with the Wind”. It is located 30 km south of Burgas, near Sozopol.

• The town of Sozopol and Ropotamo (34 km from Burgas). Sozopol is considered a town of Russian military glory and is also designated an architectural reserve. The Church of the Holy Mother of God has been awarded UNESCO cultural heritage status, as well as several ancient churches that have been preserved to this day. Small old-world streets, souvenir shops, restaurants along the promenade, relaxation and a great boost of energy. Nearby lies the Ropotamo reserve – untouched nature and fauna, which you can reach by pleasure boat.
• The town of Pomorie (15 km from Burgas).  It is famous for its mud-therapy resorts. There is a state-run health centre in Pomorie, where you can undergo examinations and treatment: the Specialised Rehabilitation Hospital. Address: 7 Prof. Parashkev Stoyanov Street. • The town of Nessebar (28 km from Burgas) – the old part of Nessebar, which is situated on a peninsula, is considered a UNESCO cultural and historical monument. It has more than 40 churches. It is a very pleasant place for walks, and pleasure boats run from here to Sveti Vlas. In its architectural style it is very similar to the town of Sozopol. The Archaeological Museum in the old town houses evidence of the Thracian era. Archaeological excavations take place there constantly, and every year it is confirmed that the town is considered the oldest in Europe.

• The resort of Sveti Vlas (44 km from Burgas) – famous for its magnificent yacht marina and the promenade along the seafront.  The fresh sea and mountain air have a beneficial effect on the respiratory tract and strengthen the immune system.
