Blue Flag 2026: which Bulgarian beaches and marinas received the prestigious international award

The Bulgarian Black Sea coast continues to strengthen its position as one of the cleanest and most comfortable seaside destinations in Europe. In 2026, the country set its own record for the number of beaches and marinas awarded the international environmental Blue Flag («Blue Flag») distinction.

According to official data from the Bulgarian Blue Flag movement and the international jury of the programme, in the 2026 season the prestigious award was granted to 26 beaches and 6 marinas in Bulgaria. This is the highest figure in the country's history.

What the «Blue Flag» means

The Blue Flag programme has been in operation since 1987 under the auspices of the international organisation Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and is considered one of the most authoritative environmental certifications in world tourism.

The award is granted only to those beaches and marinas that meet strict international requirements:

  • high quality of seawater,
  • environmental management,
  • safety of holidaymakers,
  • the presence of lifeguards and medical assistance,
  • cleanliness of the territory,
  • accessibility of infrastructure,
  • environmental education,
  • modern level of service.

The certificate is confirmed annually following repeated inspections and monitoring.

How Bulgaria compares to other countries

In terms of the number of Blue Flag beaches, Bulgaria still lags behind the major maritime nations of Europe, however the dynamics of development are impressive.

Leaders of the Blue Flag programme in Europe

Traditionally, the largest number of awards is received by: Spain, Greece, Turkey, Italy, France.

The world leaders of the Blue Flag programme in 2026 traditionally remain the countries of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean. First place was once again taken by Spain, where the international environmental award was granted to 642 beaches and 101 marinas. The country has for many years been considered the benchmark for quality beach infrastructure and environmental control in the tourism sector.

Second place goes to Greece with 623 Blue Flag beaches and 18 marinas. Thanks to the huge number of islands, clean sea and high level of service, Greece consistently ranks among the best beach destinations in Europe.

In 2026, Turkey received 577 awards for beaches and 29 — for marinas, continuing to actively develop the resort infrastructure of the Mediterranean and Aegean coasts. Italy also maintains a strong position: 487 beaches and 84 marinas in the country have been distinguished with the prestigious environmental certificate.

France received 388 Blue Flag beaches and more than 100 marinas, and Portugal — more than 400 awarded beaches. Among the Adriatic countries, Croatia particularly stands out, where the certificate was awarded to 109 beaches and 27 marinas.

Against this background, Bulgaria looks very respectable for a country with a relatively small coastline. In 2026, the Bulgarian Black Sea coast received 26 beaches and 6 marinas with the Blue Flag — this is the best result in the country's history and an important confirmation of the high quality of seawater, infrastructure and environmental standards at Bulgarian resorts.

It is important to bear in mind that the length of the Bulgarian coastline is significantly shorter than that of Spain or Greece. With its comparatively compact coastline, Bulgaria demonstrates a very high density of certified beaches.

Why this matters for the Bulgarian real-estate market

The growth in the number of Blue Flag beaches has a direct impact on the appeal of the Bulgarian coast for:

  • foreign property buyers,
  • families with children,
  • investors,
  • digital nomads,
  • tenants of premium housing.

Beaches with an international environmental certificate are traditionally regarded as more liquid locations for buying seaside property.

This is particularly true for such resorts as Sveti Vlas, Nessebar, Sozopol, Pomorie, Burgas and Sunny Beach.

The presence of a Blue Flag boosts tourist confidence and drives growing demand for rentals and property purchases near certified beaches.

For property buyers this is another important signal that Bulgaria continues to strengthen its reputation as a safe, comfortable and environmentally attractive destination for living and holidaying by the sea.
