Beaches of Bulgaria awarded the "Blue Flag" in 2020

Bulgaria is renowned for its wonderful golden sandy beaches and beautiful sea landscapes. The beaches on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast are located both at well-known resorts and far from populated areas, hidden away from everything but the sea. The resort beaches offer traditional amenities such as umbrellas and sunbeds, restaurants and water attractions. Everywhere you can easily relax with a cold cocktail in hand and enjoy your holiday.

In 1995, Bulgaria first applied to participate in the Blue Flag programme.

The Blue Flag is a voluntary certification of beaches and marinas established by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) — a non-governmental organisation whose membership includes representatives from more than 70 countries.

In 2020, on the 25th anniversary of the Blue Flag movement, 4,500 applications were submitted for the award from the northern hemisphere.

To earn the prestigious flag, beaches and marinas must meet a number of criteria relating to seawater quality, environmental information and environmental education, safety, services and amenities.

The best Blue Flag beaches in Bulgaria in 2020: Arkutino, Dunes-South, Dunes, Sozopol Harmanite, Sozopol central beach, Pomorie eastern beach, Nessebar southern beach, Sunny Beach-South, Sunny Beach-Central, Sunny Beach-North, Sveti Vlas, New Beach, Sunny Day, Golden Sands, Albena, White Lagoon and the only yacht marina — "Marina Dinevi".

In the anniversary year 2020, the Bulgarian Blue Flag family was joined by three new beaches — Arkutino, Dunes-South and Central Sozopol.

The international jury took into account the special situation with the coronavirus that the world is facing and which will inevitably affect the upcoming season. It is emphasised that beaches awarded the Blue Flag must always observe national and international health principles and legislation relating to Covid-19.

The best beaches of Bulgaria for a family holiday

1. Sunny Beach

An iconic location that combines a variety of activities: beach holidays, sports activities, attractions, show programmes, animations for children, a water park and so on. During the day, restaurants, cafes and bars are open.

2. Golden Sands
The beach with fine-grained golden sand is 3.5 km long and up to 100 m wide. The area around the resort is unique in its flora. The resort is designated as a natural park.

3. The beach at Albena

Albena's pride is its clean beach, distinguished by its silky sand. The best beach in Europe, almost 4 km long and up to 150 m wide. The entry into the sea is gently sloping. A variety of water sports, attractions and sports grounds create excellent conditions for family holidays with children and make Albena a favourite destination for everyone. The air is truly crystal clear and invigorating, thanks to the high oxygen content, which is linked to the complex's proximity to the unique "Baltata" nature reserve.

4. Dunes in Sozopol

The village beach stretches for 4.5 km and is covered with fine sand. The sea here becomes gradually deeper. The resort is being actively developed. The bay is convenient for surfing. Duni Holiday Village has seven tennis courts and several swimming pools. Guests can engage in many sports, such as archery, table tennis, boccia, darts, aqua gymnastics, water skiing, water polo, banana boat, stretching and tae bo.

5. Primorsko

Primorsko is famous for the longest beach in Bulgaria (10 km), which is home to more than 80 hotels and summer campsites. Deciduous plants predominate in the region. The area is effectively a park with alleys among beech trees.

6. "Zlatna Ribka" in Sozopol

The "Golden Fish" campsite is spread out just 2 km to the west of the town of Sozopol. The town ranks 1st in the "Wonders of Bulgaria" list. The relics of Saint John the Baptist were recently discovered on the island of Saint Ivan. Every year at the end of summer, the "Apollonia" festival takes place in Sozopol.

7. "Gradina", Sozopol

The "Garden" campsite is located 4 km to the south of the town of Sozopol. For holidaymakers there are clubs, a restaurant, snack bars, fast-food kiosks and shops.

8. Shkorpilovtsi

If you love nature and the feeling of freedom and space, you certainly won't be bored in Shkorpilovtsi. Lying on the beautiful golden beach with an endless view of the sea, where the crystal-clear sky and the deep blue sea merge, you will understand the true meaning of the word "holiday". If you tire of the feeling of absolute harmony, you can take a refreshing walk in nature. Just behind the beach, in its northern part, is the protected area "Kamchiyski Pyasatsi", and further to the north are the long forests at the mouth of the Kamchia River. Wandering through the dense thickets there is not for everyone, but if you have a drop of adventurous spirit, you will easily settle into the role of Indiana Jones. To the south of Shkorpilovtsi lies Cherni Nos, the northernmost point of the Stara Planina at its junction with the Black Sea.

9. Liman near Sinemorets

Sinemorets has 4 beaches. The extremely beautiful and clean northern one is called "Ustieto". To the south, beautiful rocks alternate, followed by the pristine sands of Lipite beach, surrounded by dense forests. Beyond it lies the Southern beach, and the closest to the Turkish border is the "Silistar" beach.

10. Atliman in Kiten

Atliman Beach is a very picturesque place. It is quite large. Its length is more than 2 km and its area is 80,000 sq. m. Because of the beach's northern position relative to the town, it is also known by the name of North Beach. The beach is surrounded by beautiful rocks. Right between the rocks, in a small cove, is one of the oldest restaurants at the resort. It operates only in the summer season, with coffee during the day and a disco in the late hours. Guests have the opportunity to have fun on the beach and in the sea.
