It is unlikely you will find a person who decided to buy an apartment in Varna or Burgas, moved here to live, and never visited the waterfalls. The sparkling streams of water flowing down from the cliffs stir up incredible feelings in a person's heart and leave memories for a lifetime. There are waterfalls in almost every region of Bulgaria; it is impossible to see them all, but we will certainly tell you about the most spectacular ones.
An interesting fact: there are more than 70 waterfalls in Bulgaria in total! Some of them are easily accessible to tourists, while others are hidden in the mountains. In dry weather, small waterfalls dry up, so it is recommended to visit many of them after heavy rains or in spring.
There are no major waterfalls in the Varna region. But the residents of Burgas, Sozopol and Nessebar are lucky – about an hour's drive towards Malko Tarnovo, and you will find yourself at the largest waterfall in the Strandzha Mountains – Dokuzak. The stream of water falls from a height of 5 metres. Surrounded by a relict forest, Dokuzak has become a fairy-tale place filled with magic and tranquillity. Nearby there is a place where you can spend the night. And in the neighbouring village of Stoilovo, national Bulgarian festivals are held in summer.
But waterfalls are not only a place where the grandeur of nature makes your head spin. Treasure and adventure seekers are captivated by ancient legends which tell that in those places where the water plunges from the cliffs and forms a small lake, ancient treasures are hidden. And to this day, every year tourists put on diving suits and dive into the pools formed by the falling water, trying to find the carefully concealed treasures.
It is difficult to compare Bulgarian waterfalls with Niagara, but here too there are unique places where the streams of water plunge down from a dizzying height. Interestingly, all of them are located in the Stara Planina Mountains. And that is why, if you want to buy an apartment in Bulgaria and are ready to travel, it is best to plan a real journey through these mountains.
Sometimes even waterfalls that are not very high turn out to be stunningly beautiful. As a rule, the water cascades down in tiers, creating an astonishing spectacle.
One of the most beautiful, the Krushuna Waterfall, is located in the Lovech region. Around the main 15-metre stream, several ribbons of water of varying width flow down. Fifteen minutes' drive away is the famous Devetashka Cave. From Varna these wonders of nature are located 275 km away.
A little closer is Kaya Bunar (Hotnitsa). You can reach it on foot or by car from Veliko Tarnovo. The distance is 14 km to the north. From the rounded cliffs, the water descends in three streams and forms a lake of an incredible turquoise colour.
About 20 km southeast of Veliko Tarnovo, the Kapinovo Waterfall is tucked away in the mountains. It is not very high, but combined with the surrounding nature and one of the oldest Bulgarian monasteries, it has become one of the most beloved places for recreation.
Near Veliko Tarnovo there are many other beautiful waterfalls – Dryanovo, Momin Skok. But we suggest you head to another part of Bulgaria – to the town of Smolyan. From Varna – more than 470 km. Here, near the village of Mugla, a whole cascade of waterfalls is located. The highest is called Orpheus, its water falls from a height of 68 metres.
Special attention should also be paid to Polska Skakavitsa, located more than 500 km from Varna near the Bulgarian-Serbian border. Part of the way you will have to cover on foot. But as a reward, you can see a lovely picture. From a 50-metre cliff, hidden among dense trees, several cascades come tumbling down.
On the contrary, it is not difficult to reach Rilska Skakavitsa (70 m), located in the Rila Mountains. In winter, the water freezes, and ice-climbing competitions are held here.
