What is winter like on the Bulgarian coast
The Black Sea coast is characterised by milder winters compared with the harsher winter conditions in the central and northern regions.
Is it cold in Bulgaria in winter? The average annual temperature in Bulgaria ranges from 10 to 14 °C. This shows a clear connection with altitude.
In the mountains, as altitude increases, thermal conditions depend on conditions in the free atmosphere, and at altitudes above 2,300 m above sea level, the average annual temperature is negative /Musala peak –2.9oC/.
In the plains and hilly regions of Northern Bulgaria, the lowest average monthly temperature falls in January — 2oC and -4oC.
In higher mountain zones, the monthly minimum shifts to February, with average February temperatures ranging between -8o and -10oC. At the peak of Musala the temperature is -11.6oC.
Along the Black Sea coast, the average monthly temperatures in January and February are positive. On the northern coast they are 8-10 °C, and on the southern coast – 8-12 °C.
Snow has not been observed on the Bulgarian coast for the last several years.
However, there is snow closer to the ski resorts, where the snow cover can reach 3 m in depth.
Heating in Bulgaria
There are several types of energy sources used for heating a home:

- natural gas;
- propane and butane gas system;
- solid fuel;
- liquid fuel;
- heat pumps.

In the upcoming heating season, a kilowatt-hour of central heating in Bulgaria will cost on average 5 cents, electricity — 12.3 cents, firewood — 3.3 cents, natural gas — 4.4 cents.
