13 Beaches in Bulgaria Received the Blue Flag Award in 2021

In 2021, 13 beaches in Bulgaria and one Bulgarian yacht port received the international Blue Flag award – Blue Flag. This means that the seawater here is of the highest quality, and the infrastructure is perfectly suited for recreation and environmental protection. These are the best beaches in Bulgaria for holidays with children.

List of beaches:

• Golden Sands. The beach is located in the northern part of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, 17 km from Varna. It is known for its fine golden sand and gentle entry into the water. More than 70 hotels and residential complexes have been built here, where studios and apartments of various sizes are for sale. Proximity to Varna allows property owners to live at the resort year-round, working and studying in Bulgaria's third-largest city.

• Sunny Day beach is located 11 km from Varna. Most of it belongs to the paid zone and is under the responsibility of hotels. However, there is also a free part, where you can set up your own umbrella and enjoy the cosiness and grandeur of the sea. A wide strip of clean sand borders a dense forest that provides life-giving shade in the summer heat. Lovers of spa treatments will find a full range of services here, as well as a pool with warm mineral water.

• The town beach of Sveti Vlas is divided by rocks into several sections; for many years it has attracted tourists and holidaymakers from all over the world. It is here that the largest yacht port in Bulgaria – Marina Dinevi is located, which was also, as expected, awarded the Blue Flag. The air is filled with the freshness of the sea and forest. Ordinary residential buildings have been built in the town, and there are many complexes with swimming pools and restaurants that operate year-round. Unlike many resorts, in Sveti Vlas you can live year-round – there is a school, a bank, supermarkets and a hospital. The distance to Burgas International Airport is 40 km.

• The beaches of Sunny Beach. The famous resort has three beaches, each of which has been awarded the Blue Flag. These are the northern, central and southern beaches. The beach strip is considered the longest and widest in Bulgaria. Its total length is 8 km. The width varies from 30 to 60 m. Fine, soft sand, dunes, a gentle entry into the sea, and a huge number of bars, cafes and entertainment venues make it a great place for holidays with families with children, young people, respectable couples and pensioners. Nearby there are numerous residential complexes for every budget. Some are adapted for seasonal holidays, while others are perfectly suited for year-round living. The distance to Burgas is 36 km.

• Nessebar South beach is located to the south of the world-famous town of Nessebar, a centre of architecture and history. The sandy shore is surrounded by a beautiful park, where locals and visitors stroll along shaded paths all year round. In winter, swans flock to the coast. Life in Nessebar is in full swing all year round – shops, commercial firms, banks and restaurants are open, and numerous competitions are held. You can reach Burgas Airport by bus or car; the distance is only 34 km.

• Pomorie East. Another exceptionally beautiful place is located in the area of the old town, rich in history and opportunities for balneological treatments. The sand here is rich in iron and has a dark tint. The town has several museums, supermarkets, mud-bath centres, schools and cafes. Thanks to its location and constant wind, the air is always fresh and cool. The town is located on a small peninsula 20 km from Burgas.

• Sozopol Centre beach is located in a small historic town of the same name. At any time of the year, Sozopol is filled with tourists attracted by the ancient architecture, restaurants with delicious dishes and a variety of entertainment. In summer, the wide sandy beach is filled with holidaymakers. 2 km away there is a water park and the famous Ravadinovo Castle. A bus runs every half hour to Burgas, which is located 24 km from Sozopol. 

• Sozopol Harmani. The uniqueness of this Black Sea beach is that it has received the Blue Flag every year since 2000. There are zones with paid services, and zones where you can relax for free. Guests are offered cafes, bars and water sports. Nearby, residential complexes with swimming pools, parks and small restaurants are being built, and there are shops. The centre of Sozopol is about 2 km away.

• Dunes beach is located to the south of Sozopol. A characteristic feature is the absence of a paid zone. A strip of sand 30-50 m wide stretches along the old road, not far from a nature reserve, where many species of birds can be seen year-round. Rare flowers grow on the beach. In the summer season, lifeguards are on duty. 

• Dunes-South. Another beach with free access. Wild, without kiosks, shops or restaurants. It is here that you can enjoy the freedom of beach holidays and high, unrestricted waves. You can only get here from Burgas by car; the distance is 37 km.  

• Arkutino beach is located near the small town of Primorsko, 50 km from Burgas Airport. Nearby is the famous Ropotamo nature reserve. Many birds nest here, and you can see chamois, wild boars and other animals. 2.5 km away is the mouth of the river of the same name, along which in summer you can take a tourist boat ride and go out into the open Black Sea.

The Albena and White Lagoon beaches, as well as regular participants — Elenite and Oasis, which had held the "Blue Flag" in previous years, did not receive the award in 2021.
