“In Love with the Wind”, Ravadinovo village

«In Love with the Wind» – such a romantic name was given by Georgi Kostadinov Tumpalov to his castle, built 35 km from Burgas and 2 km from the ancient town of Sozopol. 
The castle is private property. Its construction began in 1996. Today it has become a tourist attraction in Bulgaria, open to anyone who wishes to visit. And there is much to see here – an artificial lake with swans, a garden with fountains, waterfalls, arches and statues. There is also a mini-zoo, stables, a winery, an art gallery, a chapel, a cinema hall and a restaurant.

The castle and the surrounding grounds look as though you have suddenly found yourself in a fairy tale. The walls are covered in ivy. Thanks to carefully chosen materials, at dawn the elements of the building take on a pinkish tint, during the day they appear white, and at night they begin to glow. The atmosphere is perfectly suited for photo shoots and film productions. Every year hundreds of couples in love act out fairy-tale scenes here to obtain unforgettable photographs, and in 2013 the castle became the main set for the film «Sleeping Beauty». 

The Palace of Ahmed Dogan

An even more contemporary building is the palace of the Bulgarian politician and oligarch Ahmed Dogan, located right on the seashore near Burgas. The site for construction was chosen on Cape Chukalyata in Rosenets Park. Construction work began in 2005 and cost 750 thousand euros. The building and the surrounding grounds are private property with restricted access, so what the building looks like from the inside can only be guessed. 

On the vast grounds, in addition to the huge residential building, there is a pier, a gazebo, a greenhouse and a park. 

Euxinograd

You can also enjoy visiting palace complexes in Varna. Here, visitors can tour (by prior appointment) the Euxinograd Palace, built as the summer residence of Prince Alexander I of Battenberg. Construction began in 1881 and was completed in 1885. The project was designed by the Austrian architect Viktor Rumpelmayer. 

The main building housed reception halls, a music salon, a dining room, bedrooms, guest rooms and staff quarters. On the grounds there is a wine cellar which is still in operation today; there is also a greenhouse and stables. The highlight of the ensemble is the park. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, more than 50 thousand trees of various species were planted here, brought in from Italy, France and Hungary. 

Today the park is divided into two parts – French and English. The French part is located in front of the entrance to the palace. Here you will find a lake with water lilies, roses of unique beauty, azaleas, rhododendrons and the famous bronze figure of Neptune. The English part consists of shady alleys. The Kestrichka Bara river flows through it, spanned by picturesque bridges. Unique sundial clocks, a gift from Queen Victoria of Great Britain, are located next to the main alley. 

“Quiet Nest” in Balchik

Another famous palace in Bulgaria was given the romantic name «Quiet Nest». It is located in Balchik, 44 km from Varna, and was built as the summer residence of Queen Marie of Romania. Construction began in 1926 and was completed in 1937. There are no imposing luxurious buildings here; the place is filled with cosiness and warmth. 

The complex includes the palace, several villas, arched compositions entwined with ivy and grapevines, a wine cellar, a chapel, a monastery, a waterfall and a wonderful park area. It displays a unique blend of eastern and western motifs. 

A neat two-storey house with a minaret – the palace of Queen Marie. This modest building, created from the drawings of the Romanian artist Alexandru Satmari, is situated near the sea and resembles a traditional Balkan dwelling more than a royal palace. Nearby a small chapel is tucked away. 

The «Blue Arrow» villa rises on a cliff. Today it houses a wine tasting hall and a gallery. 

Around the palace complex there is a park, which in 1940 was transformed into the Balchik Botanical Garden. Every year a tulip festival is held here. Blooming roses, irises and rhododendrons fill the park with wonderful fragrances.
