What is the procedure for obtaining a Bulgarian residence permit for foreign pensioners?

Foreign pensioners who have reached retirement age under the laws of the country in which they reside and who own property in Bulgaria are entitled to obtain a Bulgarian residence permit. In addition, they must provide a bank statement confirming that their account holds no less than 12 minimum monthly salaries as defined by Bulgarian legislation. They must also take out private health insurance from a Bulgarian company. The cost of such insurance is usually between 70 and 80 euros per year.

The residence permit (residency) is initially issued for one year. It is subsequently renewed. The cost is around 500 leva annually. At each renewal, all of the guarantees listed above must be reconfirmed. After 5 years have passed, you are entitled to apply for Permanent Residence in Bulgaria.
